Gosport and Lee on the Solent
Situated on the South Coast, Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent has a strong military connection, which dates back to the eighteenth century when Portsmouth Dockyard was extended across the harbour into Gosport at Priddys Hard and Royal Clarence Yard. Grange Airfield had long been used for flight training and trained pilots for World War II. Nearby HMS Daedalus, at Lee-on-the-Solent, was a Fleet Air Arm base. The town made a major contribution to D-Day with three embarkation points at Stokes Bay, Beach Road and Hardway. In the 1930’s, ship and boat building and supplying the Royal Navy dominated the Gosport economy. But in the post war years, new factories were built on bomb-damaged sites and the town thrived with factories making televisions and other electronic equipment, plastic products, pharmaceuticals and wallpaper. Then the 1990’s saw the closure of several defence establishments and so Gosport turned from its reliance on the Navy and defence to create new employment in new industries.
Boat building and sailing have long been established in the area with the first marina appearing in 1957 and several other busy and thriving marinas opening since.
Between 1827 and 1831 Robert Cruickshanks, architect, designed “The Crescent”, the grand Georgian terrace of houses described as the best example of this type in Hampshire and these remain an important part of Gosport’s history.
In terms of housing Gosport, Lee-on-the-Solent with adjacent Hill Head and Stubbington offer a wide variety of properties from studio flats to large, detached houses standing in their own grounds, and with the regeneration of the former Naval bases there are now many properties situated along the harbour entrance at Portsmouth and also looking out over the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Lee-on-the-Solent has its own range of shops providing a village style community, and Gosport High Street includes the Town Hall, major banks and shops. A short passenger trip across on the Ferry to Portsmouth gives access to the mainline railway station to Waterloo and also the popular Gunwharf retail development situated on the former grounds of HMS Vernon.
Stubbington Village centre is approximately 1 mile from the beach, and there are a good range of shops for most daily requirements. Hill Head enjoys beach front property and adjoins Titchfield Haven with its well-known bird sanctuary.
Gosport, Lee-on-the-Solent and the surrounding areas are well served for recreational facilities including several yacht clubs, two golf courses, two tennis/squash clubs, angling clubs etc
